Nizoral (Generic)
Nizoral (ketoconazole) is an antifungal medication. Fungi are organisms normally found on the skin and in moist areas of the body. When the skin is injured or chronically moistened, or normal bacteria flora of the body are altered due to prolonged antibiotic treatment, fungus can proliferate to cause inflammation of the skin or moist body areas.

Uses

Nizoral (ketoconazole) is used for treating fungal infections. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Ketoconazole is an azole antifungal. It kills sensitive fungi by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane.

How to take

Ketoconazole may be taken with or without food. Ketoconazole tablets need the acidity of the stomach to dissolve. Therefore, ketoconazole should be administered at least two hours before taking antacids or acid-inhibiting medications (such as Tagamet or Zantac).
Ketoconazole should be avoided by patients with liver dysfunction. Signs of liver problems include unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, yellowing of the skin (jaundice), dark urine, and pale stools. Development of these symptoms while taking ketoconazole should be reported to the physician.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
·1 dizziness, fainting, fast or pounding heartbeat;
·2 easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
·3 numbness or tingly feeling;
·4 severe depression, confusion, or thoughts of hurting yourself; or
·5 Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, weakness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Less serious side effects may include:
·1 mild nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain;
·2 mild itching or skin rash;
·3 headache;
·4 dizziness;
·5 breast swelling; or
·6 Impotence or loss of interest in sex.

Precaution

Tell your doctor your medical history especially: liver disease, history of alcohol use, digestion problems, and any drug allergies. Do not consume alcoholic beverages while taking this drug. This medication should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Ketoconazole may be excreted into breast milk. The manufacturer of this drug recommends you do not breast-feed while using this drug. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug interactions

Many drugs can interact with ketoconazole. Below is just a partial list. Tell your doctor if you are using:
·1 acetaminophen (Tylenol);
·2 cyclosporine (Gengraf, Sandimmune, Neoral);
·3 digoxin (digitalis, Lanoxin);
·4 tacrolimus (Prograf);
·5 loratadine (Alavert, Claritin, Tavist ND);
·6 methylprednisolone (Medrol);
·7 phenytoin (Dilantin);
·8 rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane);
·9 diabetes medication you take by mouth;
·10 a sedative such as midazolam (Versed);
·11 a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);
·12 cancer medications;
·13 birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy;
·14 methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall);
·15 cholesterol medications such as niacin (Advicor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Altocor, Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), and others; or
·16 medications to treat HIV or AIDS.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
